A highly successful “Seals Oldtimers Derek Oord Memorial Hockey Tournament” was held recently in April in Wainfleet, bringing together former teammates, close friends, family members, and community supporters to honour the memory of Derek Oord.

The well-attended event was organized by Derek’s former teammates and close friends, with generous support from fellow hockey players, local businesses, family, and friends. Together, the tournament raised $1,327.25 in support of Help A Child Smile (HACS).

Help A Child Smile is a grassroots charity dedicated to supporting children treated for cancer and their families. The organization provides special family events and activities throughout the year, giving families the opportunity to leave the hospital behind for a time and focus on creating positive memories together.

In addition to family events, HACS also offers practical support programs for families facing the challenges of childhood cancer treatment. These supports include hospital parking assistance, gas cards to help offset travel expenses, and HACS knapsacks for children admitted to hospital. The knapsacks are filled with comfort items and toiletries and include a special HACS pillow to provide comfort during hospital stays.

Derek himself shared a special connection with HACS. In the early years of the organization, while battling cancer as a child, Derek and his family helped collect donations in support of the program. Through the organization, Derek was one of many children given opportunities to smile during difficult times.

The Oord family extends sincere thanks to everyone who supported the event and helped make the tournament such a meaningful success.
