We are deeply saddened to learn that your child has cancer, but we hope you find strength in knowing that there is a caring community around you. Many have walked this path and understand what you are going through. We warmly welcome you into our Help A Child Smile (HACS) family.

HACS is dedicated to supporting families with children being treated for cancer at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Our mission is to provide them with moments of joy and opportunities to have fun. What started 37 years ago as an act of kindness by a group of family and friends for a young cancer patient named Kacey-Lynn Rainville has grown into a registered charity that has supported over 1,600 families battling childhood cancer to date.

The very first day-trip to the newly opened Wonderland in 1986 laid the foundation for what would become Help A Child Smile (HACS). Over the past 38 years, HACS has continuously sought out new opportunities for our families to enjoy fun-filled days together, sharing experiences with others facing the challenges of childhood cancer. Our extensive list of activities includes Disney On Ice, NHL Alumni games, African Lion Safari, Canada’s Wonderland, go-karting, an annual family picnic, and a festive Christmas party!

We understand the immense challenges families face during extended hospital stays, and we’re here to help. Families who register with us receive:

– A complimentary $100 gas card
– Hospital parking passes for the duration of active treatment
– Fertility banking for adolescents
– Financial assistance for Bone Marrow/Stem Cell transplants at Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital and much more

Our support extends beyond financial aid. Members of our families are invited to participate in:

– Parent support group meetings
– Teen group outings
– Bereavement counseling

Additionally, we provide the oncology ward and clinic with a variety of resources, including books, craft supplies, multi-lingual literature, games, DVDs, and more.

We are sincerely sorry to learn that your child is ill. Please know that we are committed to offering support and opportunities to help your family through this difficult time.

Once you complete your registration form, your child will be added to our membership database. Please ensure all information is filled out, including names of both parents and any siblings. Once registered, you can sign up for family events by visiting our Family Events page.
